Why Teach Kinder?
Alot of people assume Kindergarten is like a daycare, and not as necessary as the other grades, but I disagree. During my substitute teaching days, I subbed quite a bit in Kindergarten. Kindergarten introduces students to the structure of school. I love being organized, so teaching the students how to work within a routine will be right up my alley. I also have tons of patience. I have a 3 year old daughter and a 4 year old son, combine that with being a military wife and moving 9 times in the past 6 years and you should start to see why I have patience! Having patience is an absolute must for teaching Kindergarten because you are teaching skills that many of the students are learning for the first time. You are also dealing with their emotions, and teaching them how to behave in a school setting. Their is also a fun side to teaching Kindergarten! Kindergarten is colorful, with alot of art projects, holiday celebrations, fun stories to read, imaginations running wild, etc. I also like the idea of having a partner teacher for support. Many Kindergartens are a half day program which means you have a partner teacher that helps while you are teaching, and then you help while they are teaching. The students may not remember me as adults since they will be 5 years old in kindergarten, but I hope to make a positive impact in each of their lives!

I still remember my kindergarten teacher! Mrs. Loftman. She had curly brown hair and was short with a soft voice. I'm sure they'll remember you too!
ReplyDeleteTeaching kindergarten intimidates me a little. I'm a fairly patient person, but I find myself getting annoyed at having to tell kids the same thing repeatedly because they weren't listening the first time around. I like the idea of all the fun stories, art projects, and learning letters and numbers. Those are things I enjoy about babysitting younger kids--getting to do those things with them. I'm also an organized person, but I tend to think of kindergarten as unorganized and chaotic because kids are used to running around and playing and not sitting still and listening. I think it would be a challenge to try and make them behave in that more structured setting for the first time.
I think kindergarten socializes kids to the formal education system. Having a good beginning can lead to a smooth path.
ReplyDeleteKindergarten was not required when I was a little boy. My parents didn't have money to send my brother or sisters to a kindergarten. But for some reason, I attended two months of kindergarten. I didn't remember much except the daily cookie I received everyday. R-J
I definitely agree that kindergarten is such an important grade and kindergarten teachers are most certainly not babysitters! I teach preschool currently and know that is such an important stepping stone to kindergarten. I have friends who teach kindergarten and they always say they an tell which students have been to preschool and which have not. Kindergarten is the time where they learn to socialize properly in school. I definitely agree that kindergarten is so important and trust me, you will have students who remember you and will come and visit you years later when they are grown up!
