All I Really Need to Know I Learned In Kindergarten

Most of what I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be;
I learned in Kindergarten.

Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate mountain, but here in the sandpile at recess.
These are the things I learned:

Share everything.
Play fair.
Don't hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don't take things that aren't yours.
Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life-
learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play
and work every day some.

Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world,
watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.

  1. This is a fantastic little piece/poem(I'm not sure how to classify it). It shows how the basic things you learn as a child are some of the fundamental guidelines for living and cooperating with others.

  2. I really enjoyed this and think it is important to remind adults to get back to our basics as well. How easily we forget with our busy schedules and daily tasks. I think I might print this out and post it in my house and in my office.

  4. I love this!! It is really true that you learn basic lessons while in kindergarten. That is the age that we can teach our kids life's basic lessons in the simplest form.

  5. So true! Kindergarten really is the start to the basic wisdom that we still use today without even thinking twice. I think I've done or said most of these just this week!

  6. i loved reading this poem. It remindded me of the simple things in life that make you happy. I think that i learned everthing in this poem in kindergarden but as i grew up i forgot them. Its time now to start applying them again especially since i want to be a teacher.

  7. I love it! This poem reminded about the innocence of children. This is really what kindergarten is about, creating good character that the children will forever value. Like Stefanie said, that is the age that we can teach out kids life's lessons in the simplest form!

  8. That's an interesting way to look at it. Just like, when you learn to count to ten, you can pretty much get anywhere in math from there. I like how you pointed out that the simple things we learn in kindergarden are the foundations for just about everything else. However, just to play devil's advocate, what about the students that are absent that day, or just didn't grasp those ideas in kindergarden?

  9. I love this! Kindergarten is the foundation for every students future. As everyone mentioned before me, this is the age where a students life is not complex, and everything can be taught at a simple level, because it's brand new information. These students are blank canvases, and what they learn from kindergarten will carry through their educational career.
